After collecting the results provided from the questionnaire, I am now able to apply comparisons to the two posters. After analyzing the results I will attempt to find a conclusion as to which film would be more successful.
Out of the 10 random people who answered the questionnaire for both of the posters, only 40% of the Males asked, would watch the film based on the original poster. The next question, asked the person to state why they would not watch the film based on the original poster. The main feedback was that the poster lacked information. They liked the dark orange and brown colors, however the images were too vague. After watching the film, i have too agree, as it seems the poster struggles to clearly specify the main genre. The Male gender is very important to impress when marketing an Action and Adventure film, and the original poster struggles to do exactly that.
Out of the 10 random people who answered the questionnaire for both of the posters, only 10% of the females asked , would watch the film based on the Original poster. Although the poster struggles to give the viewer enough information, such as the genre, I think that the poster itself will appeal more to females due to hints of action. As this is the case, I am not surprised that the percentage of females who would watch the film is low. Action and Adventure films do tend to appeal to males more, however Penelope Cruz is admired by many female fans, and I believe that her presence in the film will attract those fans. In my own poster, I decided that I would try and encourage females to watch the film. I decided that I would do this, by using more of a range of images including her in the action scenes. I hope that this would appeal females more to the film.
After analyzing the results from both the original and my own adaptation i have come to the conclusion that both posters, definitely appeal to age group of roughly 15-25 years old. The reason being, is that the posters create a sense of adventure and action. These two aspects appeal to a younger audience as Action films allow the viewer to release their inner child, and indulge into the film. Older audiences may feel too old to watch action packed films and that some of the violence is to dark or gruesome.
When collecting the results, for the original poster, I couldn't help but see that the feedback was very negative, but especially when talking about the clarity of the genre. The viewer tended to miss the fact that the film has both Action and Adventure. The Action aspects were unclear to the audience and as this is the case, I thought that it was necessary to include more aspects of violence and action in my own poster. After analyzing the results from my own poster, it seemed that the genre of the film, was far clearer than the original poster.
Although the original poster has its flaws, it does succeed in marketing its talent. Penelope Cruz and Matthew McConaughey are both acclaimed actors and its no surprise that they were brandished all over the Front of the poster. This is all very promising yet the marketing of the characters, literally stops at the first hurdle. While researching the film, I couldn't believe the lack of interviews and publicity, in fact I only found two interviews, both with minimal in information and interest.
The main issue with the original poster, is that it struggles to give any hints of narrative. Once you see the film itself, I begin to understand why the marketing campaign was so poor. The poster is very misleading in places and also seems to disregard vital information and characters. The main theme of the narrative, is the characters struggle across the Sahara in order to discover a lost American ship. However the poster shows no signs of their objective. This gives me the impression that the narrative itself has no direction.
The original poster uses a very contrasting which does not reflect the setting as well as it could have. The film is clearly set in Sahara, however I feel that the post does not accurately portray some of other settings in the film. The key issue which I've touched on several times now, is that the film does not deliver enough information. Without jam packing the poster, I wanted to provide as much info as possible.
The original poster seemed to appeal to a younger audience of 15-20 years old's, in comparison to my own representation which i found that older audiences were also interested. Im not 100% sure why this was the case as it wasn't something I had taken into consideration during the editing process. I thought that the original poster succeeded in targeting the correct age group yet it seems that the participants found my poster more appealing to the older audience.
