Distrubutors will create a detailed and constructive distribution plan through consultations with producers and studios companys. The distributors have very inportant decisions to make such as when and how to release a film in order to maximize the chances of success. The distributor must take certain factors into account when deciding when and how to release a film. Many childrens films are released in the summer holidays, due to the fact that parents and families as a whole are able to go to the cinemas.
Distributors will estimate what a film may earn and then create a budget, which will cover the cost of its distrubtion etc. The most inportant goal for any film is to make or profit, however many films struggle to break even, so making a profit generally means that film was either made very well, or its marketing was flawless.Distribution plans can change over time due to the current market and timings. Initial scripts and discussions with filmmakers, are usually not enough to create a final plan, infact most distribution plans are confirmed when the film is completely finished.
Distribution Risk
Distrubuting a film, is all about risk. Although distributors will research heavily into current markets and trends, they will never truley be able to predict wether the film will succeed. Audiances's preferences and taste are always changing, similar to fashion and music taste. As this is the case, distributors have to evolve with the audiance.
