Short Film: Continuity Unit

Short Film Evaluation
For my group’s short film, we decided to try and create a creative/funny clip. The idea around the Dragons Den is that a simple minded young lady unknowingly stumbles into a mafia boss’s hideout. The mafia boss is stunned by the young ladies appearance. Both Humour and the simplicity of the clip, helped create a very effective piece of work.
My favourite aspect of our clip is the humorous punch line at the end of the video. Kirks (The Boss) reaction to the teacher’s entrance is very humorous. His simplistic reply of “You Twat” is very effective in creating humour. As well as the short and snappy punch line, I also like the part of the video in which kirk pulls out his gun and drugs. The stupidity of the Girls appearance as well as kirks reaction is what made the video so enjoyable.
Although most of the cuts and frames worked very well, we did find that during the post-production stages of creating the video, some of the frames weren’t positioned in the initial position. However we corrected the mistakes during editing and I honestly believe that the final video came out better than I ever thought it would.
During the filming of the video, we rarely uncounted any issues. The only issue that we found was clearing out the background objects which did not fit the scene.  We also found that space was an issue. Moving the camera in a small area became frustrating at times, however we ploughed through and captured the necessary frames.

The only issue that we faced was when we were shooting our video. When shooting the video, I felt that some of the cuts from one frame to another were not smooth, and in some cuts the clip seemed to jump. Although the cutting of the frames did not go quite to plan, I still feel that we were able to reduce the mistakes in post-production.
If we were able to go back in time, I would have made sure that certain shots were captured smoother and with less mistakes. I also would have reduced the intro as it seemed very long and did not pull the viewer into the story as quick as it could have done. If we had done this earlier, then the audience may have enjoyed the video more. For future pieces of work, I will most definitely shoot more clips so that when we enter post production, we are able to edit the scenes easier. Although we had some minor issues when filming the video, on a whole, the smooth and very impressive cutting of the clips as well as the fantastic dialogue/acting created a very dynamic video.

  1. You mean "encoutered" not "uncounted"! This is a good start, Oliver, but you have not included stills from your project and have not explored much of the technical elements we have introduced you to - continuity conventions like 180 degree rule, eyeline match cuts, match cuts on action, establising shots etc, or other technical terms such as ECU or other shot distances, or diagetic sound, etc. It's promising but underdeveloped. I'd be happy for you to add to it and email me when you have done so for me to have another look.
